Risk a Chance Meeting in ‘Parked’ at the Raven

By Trish Ostroski

Chance meetings and the bonds that are formed sometimes instantly is at the heart of Rita Norton Mazza’s very human comedy Parked, currently at The Raven Playhouse. We’ve all had these chance meetings, so the concept is something that everyone can relate to. The show reflects this cycle of a friendship. Each scene is designed around the unique concept of sitting and waiting on a bench, whether that is in the park, at the hospital, skating rink or train station. The bench is a focal point that is just slightly moved or readjusted prior to each scene to designate a new place. The simple set changes make for a very smooth flowing production with brief pauses between scenes which adds to the charm.

Three parents meet at the park while watching their children and the action then stems from this meeting. This show unfolds in a delightful manner, like a spring day in a park. Like so many other relations in life, sparks fly, there are funny and poignant moments and relationships evolve. The three characters initially grow together and then grow apart as their lives change. Each has a certain side that serves to define them. Director Chuck Hand’s touch brings an even handed flow to the entire production. The actors Jeff Haas (Larry), Melissa Malone (Lisa) and Candyce Columbus (Annie) bring just the right feel, bearing and anticipation to their roles as adults and parents whose relationships have been formed initially because of their children. Hesitant Lisa feels a bit out of place, Larry has a big brotherly protectiveness, and Annie punctuates her thoughts sarcastically.

Parked is $15 and runs at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays until November 29. Call (818) 468-7438 for reservations. The Raven Playhouse is located at 5233 Lankershim Blvd, near Magnolia in North Hollywood.
